CASTLE IN THE SKY was a smash in its native Japan in 1986, known mainly to fantasy and animation fans in the West via imported versions until more than a decade later, when Disney Studios recognized its popularity by releasing an English-dubbed edition in the USA. The initial Japanese DVD release is now out of print and the subsequent rerelease contains the Disney dub instead. Despite the cast being credited under pseudonyms (a standard practice for the time), the majority of the cast has been identified as they would later become part of the Streamline Pictures talent pool once the company moved into producing their own dubs. The Streamline dub of Castle in the Sky was released only on the first Japanese DVD release along with the Streamline dub of My Neighbor Totoro and The Castle of Cagliostro. Carl Macek, the head of Streamline, was disappointed with this dub, deeming it "adequate, but clumsy". In the late 1980s, an English dubbed version of the 1986 Studio Ghibli movie Castle in the Sky, produced by Magnum Video Tape and Dubbing for international Japan Airlines flights at the request of Tokuma Shoten, was briefly screened in the United States by Streamline Pictures on Maand on UK television in late 1988. ![]()
